Puget Sound Energy to present $25,000 check to the Island County Council of Governments

Funds to support community solar project on Whidbey Island

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Nov. 17, 2009) - Event Advisory:

What:   In recognition of meeting Puget Sound Energy’s challenge to increase enrollment of residential and commercial customers in the utility’s Green Power Program by 50 percent, PSE on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, will award the Island County Council of Governments a $25,000 grant toward a community solar project on Whidbey Island.

Walt Blackford, supervisor of Community Service for PSE’s South Whidbey Customer Service Office, and Heather Mulligan, market manager for PSE’s Green Power Program, will present the elected members of the Council of Governments with a check for the solar grant at their Nov. 25 meeting in Coupeville.

The Council of Governments consists of Island County Commissioners, John Dean, Helen Price Johnson, and Angie Homola; Oak Harbor Mayor, Jim Slowik; Coupeville Mayor, Nancy Conard; Langley Mayor, Paul Samuelson; Port District of Coupeville Commissioner, Benye Weber; and a representative from South Whidbey Port District.

Once the funds are awarded, the Council will determine where the solar project will be located and what type will be implemented.
When:   Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009
9 a.m.
Where:   Commissioner's Hearing Room
1 NE 6th Street, Coupeville
Background:   At the conclusion of the Challenge, a total of 1,017 Whidbey customers are now enrolled as Green Power participants, representing an increase of 58 percent over total participants as of January 1, 2009, thanks to an organized community challenge effort backed by Island County and the municipalities of Coupeville, Langley, and Oak Harbor to encourage Island residents to enroll. Special thanks go to several island organizations that were early business participants in the Whidbey Island Green Power Challenge. Previous solar grants by PSE on Whidbey have gone to South Whidbey High School, Coupeville Middle and High School and the FETCH off-leash dog park.
